The vaulted reading room of the Literary and Historical Society takes you to an atmosphere of nineteenth-century intellectual elegance. It is easy to imagine Victorian gentlemen on the leather couch discussing the latest developments in phrenology while shrouded in cigar smoke. The room is filled to the brim with old artifacts: tall ships, marble busts, and a curious wooden statue of General Wolfe from 1779.
